While I was deployed to Iraq in 2005, my mother passed away from cancer. I spent several months working with our family attorney and CPA to try to decipher her entire estate while I was half a world away. As we peeled back the layers of her planning, it wasn’t so much what she had remaining in her estate, but what she did not have left that put our family in a very hazardous situation. Her financial advisor convinced her to get rid of her disability income insurance and whole life insurance mere months before she was diagnosed with cancer because he felt her money was better suited to be invested in the bull market of the late 90’s. However, when her account values fell along with the rest of the market she also found out she had stage 4 cancer and could possibly only have 6 months to live. However, to our relief, she made it another 4 years but her assets were drained because of the lack of proper planning.

Because of this, I decided to change my focus from investment banking to financial planning because I wanted to make a difference in people’s lives and do everything in my power to help ensure other families do not go through the same hardships as my sister and I at a young age.
